reports. Cars can be rented on a short-term basis, using the Hopp app.

Ten electric cars are available for short-term rental during the first phase of the project. “These ten cars are intended for [help us] assess demand, collect data, test our app and develop our service,” says Sæunn Ósk Unnsteinsdóttir, Managing Director of Hopp Reykjavík.

The service was officially launched on Friday, when Reykjavík Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson drove the first car from Reykjavík City Hall, and University of Iceland students drove from the hotel from town to university.

The service is offered in cooperation with Höldur – Bílaleiga Akureyrar car rental, a Europcar franchisee. “They suit us well, because Höldur – Bílaleiga Akureyrar has a strong environmental policy,” says Sæunn Ósk. “That’s why we cooperate with them and [they] providing the cars… Residents are asking for more diverse transportation, and we are excited to see how this will be received by customers.

Initially, the service will be limited to Reykjavík. Starting the car costs 300 ISK and 45 ISK per minute.

You find the car using the Hopp app, go to the car and scan the QR code there. The first time you rent one of the cars, you must verify your driver’s license and agree to the terms. Cars can be parked in all legal parking spaces, even where parking is not free.

Sæunn Ósk says short-term car rental is a rapidly growing market in neighboring countries. “This is a major transportation issue, in addition to making it easier for people to live a car-free lifestyle, or to have one car instead of two,” she concludes.
